MORE ABOUT THIS MENTAL HEALTH PODCAST EPISODE

“Survival mode is the default, that you are always doing and you are never being.” – Chardét Ryel

  • Why do I feel like I’m always busy but never making progress?
  • What are the warning signs of burnout I should look out for?
  • How can I break the cycle of overthinking and stress in my daily life?

Are you constantly hustling but still waiting for that elusive feeling of inner calm to show up? If so, you’re not alone. So many of us are caught up in hustle culture—the endless cycle of doing more, achieving more, and constantly striving for that next big thing. But where does it all lead? And is it worth the toll it takes on our mental health?

In a world that glorifies busyness, it’s easy to forget that constant hustling doesn’t bring peace—it brings exhaustion, stress, and, often, burnout. So, if you’re feeling like you’re stuck in survival mode, it’s time to take a step back and reassess.

What Does Survival Mode Look Like?

You might be asking, “How do I know if I’m in survival mode?” It’s that state where everything feels like it’s just one big race—one deadline after another, one to-do list that never ends. You wake up tired, you go to bed feeling like you didn’t get enough done, and everything in between is a blur of constant activity.

Sound familiar? Here’s the thing: survival mode isn’t just about being busy. It’s a mental state where you’re always “on,” always reacting, and never pausing long enough to breathe. As one podcast guest put it, “You are constantly hustling in this idea of calm, the calm that you’re craving. It just feels very out of reach. You feel like you are always in survival mode.”

So, how do we shift out of this exhausting pattern?

The Lie of Hustle Culture

Hustle culture convinces us that if we just work hard enough, we’ll finally achieve happiness and peace. But the truth is, constantly being in “go mode” distracts us from enjoying the moment, from being present. We tell ourselves, “If I can just accomplish this next goal, then I’ll rest. Then I’ll feel calm.” But that moment never comes because there’s always something more.

One of the most powerful realizations you can have is that hustle culture feeds off the idea that our worth is tied to our productivity. But that’s a lie. “Being in hustle mode, being constantly on, is a way for you to distract yourself. And it’s also this kind of false promise of if I achieve XYZ eventually, then I will be calm,” explains a guest from the podcast. It’s time to break that cycle.

Burnout: The Unseen Consequence

Let’s face it, burnout doesn’t usually happen overnight. It creeps up on you slowly. Maybe you start feeling drained, or your passion for the things you once loved begins to fade. That’s how burnout works—it builds over time, fueled by the belief that we have to do more, be more, and never slow down.

How can you tell if you’re on the edge of burnout? Take a look at your daily habits. Are you constantly checking your phone? Do you feel guilty when you’re not being productive? Overscheduling yourself? These are clear signs that you’re headed toward burnout.

“Overscheduling is overtaxing your nervous system,” a podcast guest shared, reminding us of the physical toll that hustle takes. If you recognize these patterns in yourself, it’s time to slow down before your body and mind demand it.

How to Break Free from Survival Mode

The good news is, you don’t have to live in survival mode forever. Yes, it’s a mindset that might feel ingrained, especially if you’ve been in it for years, but there are ways to reclaim your peace and balance. It starts with small, intentional shifts in how you approach your daily life.

One key step is realizing that it’s okay to stop tying your self-worth to your accomplishments. “How do I slow down and how do I also stop tying in everything I’m doing to how much value I give or my worth or to just if I’m allowed to rest or enjoy life?” As the guest shares, it’s about learning to value yourself outside of what you achieve.

Small Shifts, Big Impact

So, how do we start? The journey out of hustle culture doesn’t require a complete life overhaul. In fact, it’s often the small changes that make the biggest difference. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Practice gratitude: Start noticing the good things in your life, even the small ones. By shifting your focus from what’s missing to what’s already present, you can begin to rewire your brain for more calm and less stress. As a guest from the podcast wisely said, “Whatever you focus on, where your awareness goes, is the perspective and the reality you create.”
  2. Take intentional breaks: If you’re constantly on the go, it’s crucial to pause—even for just a few minutes each day. These moments of stillness help reset your mind and give your nervous system a break from being in high-alert mode.
  3. Say no to overscheduling: It’s tempting to fill your calendar with tasks and events, but more often than not, this leads straight to burnout. Give yourself permission to slow down and take on less.

Reclaiming Your Inner Calm

It’s time to step back and ask yourself: Are you truly living, or are you just surviving? If you’re feeling stuck in survival mode, there’s hope. By slowing down, practicing self-care, and breaking free from the lies of hustle culture, you can reclaim your inner calm and avoid the devastating effects of burnout.

As one podcast guest pointed out, it’s about balance: “What we want to do is see how can you move from survival mode and the doing which hides the things in your life that are good or that you could improve or enjoy.”

So, take a deep breath. Give yourself permission to rest, to be present, and to enjoy the life you’re building. Remember, you don’t have to hustle your way to happiness. Sometimes, the best way to find peace is to simply slow down.
